I noticed these charming “NOEL” wall signs appearing across many blogs and wanted to see what the fuss was about. Pottery Barn offered a similar wall decor piece for about $150, which I admired but wasn’t willing to buy. Instead, I decided to make my own version for a fraction of the price.
With guidance from a few other bloggers, I visited Hobby Lobby and picked up supplies to make my own “NOEL” wall letters for roughly $8 total.
Materials
- Wooden N (Hobby Lobby, about $1.99)
- Wooden O (Hobby Lobby, about $1.99)
- Wooden E (Hobby Lobby, about $1.99)
- Wooden L (Hobby Lobby, about $1.99)
- Brown acrylic paint (or color of your choice) — I already had this
- Sponge paint brush — I used one I already owned
- Hot glue and popsicle sticks for anchoring the letters
Steps
1. Paint each wooden letter in your chosen color. I applied three coats and allowed them to dry overnight for a smooth finish.
2. After painting, let the letters dry completely. I let mine sit overnight and applied three coats for even coverage.
3. Once dry, flip the letters face down and arrange them in the proper order. I angled the “O” to match the original Pottery Barn style.
4. Use hot glue and popsicle sticks to join the letters on their backs. The popsicle sticks serve as anchors between letters to keep the arrangement secure. Press and hold briefly until the glue sets.
5. Allow the glue to set for a few minutes. Once everything is secure, your sign is ready to display.
You’ll end up with a festive “NOEL” wall sign that looks great and cost very little to make.
