Oh, what fun! I used cute lowercase alphabet cookie cutters and just three royal icing colors to decorate chocolate sugar cookies in four different festive styles. These simple techniques create charming holiday cookies perfect for gifting or serving at seasonal gatherings.

The cutters are from the Sweet Sugarbelle line and I love the lowercase letterforms—they make an adorable alphabet for personalized cookie messages.

The sugar cookie and royal icing base I used follows a reliable recipe; to make these chocolate sugar cookies, substitute 1/2 cup of flour with 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa in your favorite sugar cookie recipe. The chocolate base complements the bright icing colors and makes details pop.

Design 1 — Snowy Drip Letters: Outline each letter with white royal icing, then pipe drip shapes along the tops. Flood the dripping sections with a slightly thinner flood consistency so they settle smooth. To achieve a light dusting of snow, place non-melting decorating sugar inside a small piece of cheesecloth, gather the edges, and shake it gently over the cookies for even coverage. When the tops are dry, add a few small royal icing dots for extra texture.
For holly accents, pipe green holly leaves onto wax paper using a medium-stiff consistency. Once the leaves are firm but not completely dry, pipe small red berries on top. Let these decorations dry overnight before removing them from the wax paper to avoid breaking. Keep a bit of reserved royal icing in an airtight container to use as edible glue when attaching the holly to the cookies.

Design 2 — Holly Jolly Branches: These cookies are inspired by Christmas tree branches. Tint royal icing green and use a stiffer piping consistency to create layered branch lines around the letters. Pipe bows separately on wax paper, let them dry fully, and attach them the next day with a dab of royal icing. Layering the branch lines and allowing each layer to set slightly prevents the icing from merging into a flat blob. Finish by dusting with non-melting decorating sugar using the cheesecloth method and add white sugar pearls for decoration.

Design 3 — Candy Cane Stripes: For a candy-cane look, alternate red and white royal icing stripes. Use a black edible ink pen and an offset spatula to lightly mark evenly spaced diagonal guides if you want perfectly aligned stripes. Outline the cookie in red, pipe the diagonal red lines, then flood those areas first and fill the alternating spaces with white. For a festive touch, dot the letter J with a small piped peppermint candy.

Design 4 — Sweater Letters: For a cozy sweater effect, flood the letter with white royal icing and allow it to dry completely. Once dry, pipe parallel lines, crisscross patterns, dots, and loops on top with a slightly thicker consistency to mimic knit textures. These simple details create the look of a chunky winter sweater and add charming dimension to each letter.

All together, these four techniques—snowy drips, holly branches, candy-cane stripes, and sweater textures—use only a few colors and straightforward piping methods to produce festive, personalized letter cookies. They’re great for holiday parties, cookie exchanges, or thoughtful edible gifts. Enjoy decorating and have fun sharing these sweet treats!
