As my daughter’s Girl Scout troop leader, I recently taught the Daisies how to make GORP. GORP stands for “Good Ol’ Raisins and Peanuts” and is a simple, energizing trail mix designed to fuel hikes and outdoor activities. Traditional GORP usually includes raisins, peanuts, and chocolate candies, but you can customize it however you like as long as it stays mostly wholesome—about two-thirds healthy ingredients and one-third fun treats. The girls enjoyed this version, so I’m sharing the recipe here.

Homemade GORP
You will need roughly equal parts of:
- Raisins
- Pepitas (raw, shelled pumpkin seeds)
- Chocolate chips
- Diced, dried pineapple
- Plain or honey granola
- Mini caramel bites (often found near the chocolate chips)
Plus:
- 2 parts mixed salted nuts
- 1/2 part shredded, sweetened coconut
Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and mix thoroughly so the portions distribute evenly. Portion into zip-top bags for hiking, snacks, or lunchboxes. Properly stored in an airtight bag or container, this GORP will keep for up to two weeks, though it often disappears long before then.
