This gluten-free, vegan strawberry smoothie gets an unexpected burst of flavor from fresh basil.

I planned to make a green smoothie for breakfast, but discovered my greens had gone bad. Instead of giving up, I grabbed a handful of fresh basil and improvised. Basil is vibrant, leafy, and fragrant — a great substitute for traditional greens.
I tossed basil with strawberries, frozen banana, almond milk and a few boost ingredients, then blended until smooth. The result was a strawberry basil smoothie that’s bright, sweet, and herbaceous — refreshing and satisfying.
I used strawberries because that’s what I had on hand, but you can swap in any berries, or try peaches or mango for a different flavor profile. The pale pink color flecked with bits of green makes it as pretty as it is delicious.

We enjoyed a lovely Father’s Day, though the day ended with a big meltdown that left me feeling tired. A simple, healthy smoothie like this is exactly the kind of pick-me-up I needed — vegan, gluten-free, and easy to make.
